A forensic investigator has attributed a field fire in Kenninghall, Norfolk, that destroyed nearby homes last month to a foil balloon coming into contact with power lines. UK Power Networks (UKPN) stated that an independent investigation concluded a foil helium balloon becoming caught on overhead lines was the likely cause of the blaze.
The investigator, in an email to affected residents, reported finding debris on equipment attached to a pole in the field next to properties in Wood Close. Siobhan Fulcher, whose home was destroyed, expressed shock and disappointment, questioning if such balloons should be banned.
Ms Fulcher and her son are currently in temporary accommodation following the fire on 9 August. Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service had previously said the blaze was accidental, caused by a power transformer fault that led to sparks igniting dry ground.
A UKPN spokesperson described the incident as "rare" and said an independent forensic investigator identified the most likely cause as a third-party foil-coated helium balloon contacting an overhead line. This contact reportedly caused an electrical arc, igniting the balloon, which then fell to the field in dry, windy conditions.
