A recent inquiry into professional footballers' careers has highlighted several players who scored more own goals than goals for their own teams. Among them is former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher, who finished his career with four goals and seven own goals. He notably scored two own goals in a single match against Manchester United in 1999.
Sven van Beek, currently playing in Qatar, holds the record for the most own goals in the Eredivisie with eight, across 193 matches for Feyenoord, Willem II, and Heerenveen. In those same matches, he scored five goals for his own team. Riccardo Ferri, a former Internazionale defender, recorded six goals and eight own goals in Serie A.
Historically, Everton's Billy Balmer, active around the turn of the 20th century, scored eight own goals in open play. In over 300 appearances for the Toffees, his only goal for his own team was a single penalty in 1899. Luigi Zannier, an Italian defender from the 1950s and 1960s, also scored three goals and six own goals in Serie A matches.
