Ford is making a significant leap in its electric vehicle (EV) strategy by becoming the first automaker to integrate Apple Maps navigation and mapping directly into its upcoming vehicles. This move, announced by Apple, leverages a new set of developer tools called MapKit for Automotive, promising a more seamless and intelligent user experience for Ford EV owners.
The integration is slated to debut with Ford's new line of electric vehicles, beginning with a midsize electric truck expected to launch in 2027. This vehicle is part of Ford's broader commitment to delivering affordable and efficient EVs packed with the latest technology. To achieve this, Ford has developed a universal EV platform (UEV), which will underpin the midsize truck and eventually expand to a range of other vehicles, including sedans, crossovers, three-row SUVs, and small commercial vans.
While seemingly a minor feature compared to Ford's innovative use of single-piece aluminium unicastings for faster assembly, the Apple Maps integration is central to the company's vision for responsive and intelligent in-car features. Drivers will benefit from enhanced navigation tailored for EVs, including efficient routing, real-time traffic and incident information, and natural language turn-by-turn directions. Crucially, this system runs natively within the vehicle, distinct from Apple CarPlay, which merely mirrors iPhone apps.
The advanced mapping capabilities will also feed into Ford's next-generation BlueCruise hands-free driver assistance system. The upgraded BlueCruise, anticipated to roll out next year, is designed to manage entire highway journeys, including entrance and exit ramps. Ford has indicated that this system aims for 'point-to-point autonomy' akin to Tesla's Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software, with plans for eyes-off driving by 2028.
A significant benefit for EV owners will be smarter routing that incorporates battery preconditioning. This feature optimises the battery's temperature before arrival at a charging station, potentially reducing charge times. Beyond navigation, the integration could also enable smart home functionalities, such as automatically opening garage doors or switching on lights as a driver approaches home. Although MapKit for Automotive is open to any automaker, Ford is the inaugural partner in this new Apple initiative, with commercial terms undisclosed.
The integration also presents opportunities for Ford's commercial fleet customers through its Ford Pro business. Businesses could utilise the embedded mapping technology for efficient driver routing to job sites or to display the locations of other fleet vehicles on the map, streamlining operations and improving logistical efficiency.
