Forever Chemicals Link to Gut Inflammation in Children: New Research

The world's most ubiquitous chemicals have been linked to a potentially devastating consequence in our youngest citizens: irreversible damage to their gut health. New research suggests that exposure to 'forever chemicals' (PFAS mixtures) during critical developmental phases can increase intestinal inflammation in children, setting them up for serious conditions like irritable bowel diseases and even colorectal cancer later on.

The study, conducted by the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, followed 107 mother-child pairs from the United States and Mexico over 11 years. It's a game-changer: while previous studies have linked PFAS to inflammatory bowel disease in adults, this research delves deeper into how these chemicals affect children during their formative years.

Researchers detected elevated levels of 46 prevalent PFAS compounds – including PFOA and PFOS – in maternal blood, umbilical cord blood, or newborn dried blood spots. This exposure was strongly correlated with markers of inflammation in the children, who were tracked from birth to 11 years old.

Vishal Midya, a co-author from Mt Sinai's Icahn School of Medicine, stresses that this study fills a significant knowledge gap: it shows how early life exposure can lead to later intestinal inflammation. By focusing on mixtures rather than individual compounds, the research mirrors real-world exposure scenarios – a crucial aspect of understanding the impact of PFAS.

PFOA and PFOS are just two of the estimated 16,000 'forever chemicals' in use today. Their persistence in our environment and bodies makes them particularly hazardous for developing children. Linked to various serious health issues, including cancer and birth defects, these chemicals have earned their ominous nickname.
