A former translator for the British Army, Abdul Nabizada, has been sentenced to seven years in prison for raping a woman. The 36-year-old, who became a private hire driver in Scotland, attacked the 19-year-old woman after she got into his vehicle in Edinburgh in 2021.
Nabizada, a father of four living in Pilton, Edinburgh, denied the charges but was found unanimously guilty at a High Court trial last month. Judge John Morris KC described the crime as an "appalling betrayal of trust" during sentencing.
The court heard the woman was intoxicated when she entered Nabizada's car on Morrison Street. She expected to be taken home, but Nabizada drove to a secluded area in Joppa, close to Portobello, where the rape occurred.
Nabizada had previously worked as an interpreter for British, Danish, and American militaries in Afghanistan. His lawyer, David Taylor, stated that Nabizada was suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and is at risk of deportation due to the conviction, despite previously being granted indefinite leave to remain in the UK.
