Former boxing world champion Joe Cordina is facing a daunting court appearance next month after being charged with assault and threatening a person with an offensive weapon in a public place. The 34-year-old Welshman has been summonsed to appear at Cardiff Magistrates' Court alongside another individual, Jamie O'Brien, 32, over an incident that unfolded outside Pentwyn Service Station on Pentwyn Road, Cardiff, on 27 February 2026.
The charges against Mr Cordina relate specifically to allegations of assault and threatening a person with an offensive weapon in a public place, while Mr O'Brien faces a sole charge of assault. According to South Wales Police (SWP), both men are scheduled to appear at Cardiff Magistrates' Court; Mr Cordina on 7 July and Mr O'Brien on 28 July.
The charges against Mr Cordina follow recent news that he was denied a US visa, preventing him from competing in the United States for the WBO lightweight title. The former IBF super-featherweight world champion had been due to face Abdullah Mason in Cleveland on 4 July but revealed on social media that his application had been rejected by the US embassy in London, despite presenting supporting documentation.
Mr Cordina's professional record stands at 19 fights with only one defeat – a surprise loss of his IBF 130lb world title to Anthony Cacace in May 2024. However, he has since secured victories against Jaret Gonzalez Quiroz for the vacant WBO global lightweight title and a unanimous points victory over Gabriel Flores Jr in December 2025.
Before turning professional, the Cardiff native had an illustrious amateur career, winning British and Commonwealth titles at lightweight and representing Great Britain at an Olympics. He was part of the same Team GB programme as friend Anthony Joshua.
The upcoming court appearance is set to have significant implications for Mr Cordina's boxing career and public profile, with his future prospects hanging in the balance.
