Courtney Meppen-Walter, the former England under-18 captain and Manchester City youth player, has died at the age of 32. His death was announced by his old club, Bury, which stated it was “deeply saddened” by the news. The club's social media statement extended thoughts and condolences to his family and friends.
The cause and circumstances of Meppen-Walter's death have not been released. He was released by Bury last summer and also played for clubs including Carlisle, Chorley, Stockport, and Telford United.
In 2013, Meppen-Walter was jailed for 16 months for causing the death of two people by dangerous driving. He was driving his grandfather's Mercedes C220 saloon at nearly double the 30mph speed limit when he collided with a Nissan Micra in central Manchester. The crash killed the Nissan driver, Kulwant Singh, 32, and his sister, Ravel Kaur, 37, who were front-seat passengers. Ms Kaur's two sons, aged 16 and 17, who were back-seat passengers, were injured.
Meppen-Walter served half of his sentence. In 2019, he received a 22-month driving ban after being caught drink-driving, having been twice over the legal limit.
