Stephen Keith, a former Down hurler, has credited his training partners for saving his life after he suffered a cardiac arrest in a gym.

  • Stephen Keith collapsed after a training session in Portaferry.
  • A trained nurse began CPR, and others retrieved defibrillators.
  • Doctors later found a blocked coronary artery and fitted a stent.

Former Down hurler Stephen Keith has stated he would not be alive today without the swift actions of his training partners after he suffered a cardiac arrest in a gym. Mr Keith collapsed following a training session at a gym in Portaferry.

He spent nearly a month at Belfast's Royal Victoria Hospital as doctors investigated the cause of the cardiac arrest. A trained nurse present at the session immediately started CPR, while others located nearby defibrillators.

Doctors subsequently discovered a blocked main coronary artery and inserted a stent. Mr Keith has also had an implantable defibrillator fitted as a precautionary measure. He is now urging more people to learn CPR and ensure defibrillators are accessible in their communities.

Why this matters: The incident highlights the critical importance of CPR training and the availability of defibrillators in communities and sports clubs.

What this means for you: Learning CPR and ensuring defibrillators are available in your community could be life-saving.
