Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been taken to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad due to complaints about his health. Local media reported that Khan was transported from Adiala jail under heavy security.

This action complies with a Supreme Court ruling issued by a three-judge panel, which had mandated that the former cricketer be taken to the hospital within 48 hours for examination by physicians. The court order also specified that an eye specialist would be involved in his treatment.

Khan, 73, has been imprisoned since August 2023 on corruption charges, which he claims are politically motivated. His lawyers have previously stated he has various health conditions, including poor eyesight, and has not had access to specialist medical care.

Judges and members of Khan's political party, Tehreek-e-Insaf, have warned supporters against gathering outside the hospital, stating it would breach the court order.

Why this matters: Imran Khan remains a significant figure in Pakistani politics with a large number of supporters, despite his imprisonment.
