Former UFC fighter Tim Kennedy is receiving medical care for three gunshot wounds after an attack in the Democratic Republic of Congo left 20 people dead or wounded, Reuters reported.
The former US Army Green Beret, 47, is being treated at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, according to Newsweek. Kennedy sustained the injuries on September 17 during an attack in South Kivu province.
Derrick Van Orden, a US Congressman from Wisconsin, shared an update on social media over the weekend, saying he was "thankful" that Kennedy, 47, survived while "asking everyone to pray for his healing and that his wonderful family find Peace."
Kennedy was reportedly operating in the region with Vectus Global, a private security firm.
Throughout his MMA career, Kennedy accumulated an 18-6 record, with his final fight ending in a defeat against Kelvin Gastelum in 2016. He made his MMA debut in August 2001 and went on to hold wins over Robbie Lawler and Michael Bisping, both of whom won UFC championships.
