Research by Which? has revealed that the reality of retirement often diverges from expectations for many individuals. A survey of retired UK adults indicated that four in ten experienced a lifestyle in retirement that differed from what they had anticipated.
Of those whose experiences varied, a quarter stated their retirement life was better than expected. However, one in six reported that their retirement was worse than they had envisioned.
Which? pensions expert Holly Lanyon noted that the research explored various unexpected realities, including changes in caring responsibilities and health, as well as the importance of financial planning. Stuart Anderson, who retired in 2025, also shared his experience of adapting to a slower pace of life after a busy full-time job.
