A fourth firefighter has succumbed to injuries sustained during a rapidly spreading wildfire in the western United States last month. Nathan Matthews, 43, from Lincoln, Nebraska, died on Friday, nearly a month after he and his crew were engulfed by flames near the Colorado-Utah border.
Mr Matthews was part of a helitack crew, specialised units deployed by helicopter to remote areas to combat new, fast-growing fires. On 27 June, while operating in Mesa County, Colorado, west of Grand Junction, the crew experienced a 'burnover' – a perilous situation where fire spreads quickly, cutting off escape routes. Despite deploying emergency tent-like shelters, three of his colleagues, Emily Barker, 38, Nick Hutcherson, 27, and Sydney Watson, 26, died at the scene. Mr Matthews and another injured firefighter were airlifted for medical treatment.
The US Interior Department confirmed Mr Matthews' death on Saturday, with Brian Fennessy, chief of the US wildland fire service, describing it as "another heartbreaking loss for our wildland fire family." Memorial arrangements for Mr Matthews have not yet been announced, though his three fallen colleagues were honoured at a service earlier this month.
This tragic incident underscores the severe challenges faced by firefighters across the western US, which has been grappling with dozens of large wildfires this summer. Prolonged dry weather, record low snowfall in some regions, persistent heatwaves, and unpredictable winds have all contributed to the widespread blazes, making conditions extremely hazardous for those on the front lines.
