The joint future combat air system project between France and Germany was cancelled in June 2026 by German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron. This decision came after efforts to collaborate on the project since 2018.
Disagreements between France's Dassault Aviation and Germany-headquartered Airbus Defence and Space over leadership of the programme contributed to its collapse. France reportedly sought a smaller jet suitable for aircraft carriers, which Germany does not possess.
Further cementing the project's end, French engine maker Safran announced last week that it would cease its joint effort with Germany's MTU Aero Engines to develop engines for the fighter jet. France now appears set to pursue its own fighter jet development, while Germany is considering its options, potentially becoming a secondary customer for the UK-led Tempest jet programme.
