France has experienced 301 drownings this summer, according to Sports and Youth Minister Marina Ferrari. Speaking on France Inter radio, Ms Ferrari described the number of deaths since June 19 as a "tragic toll", representing a 14% increase compared to 2025.
The minister linked the sharp rise in drownings to the prolonged heatwaves affecting France, Spain, and Italy. She stated that people have been taking risks by entering the water, with many fatal accidents occurring in areas not authorised or supervised for swimming, including open water such as canals.
Ms Ferrari also noted that a number of drownings, particularly among the elderly, took place in individual pools. She suggested that sudden immersion in colder water on a hot day could cause shock, and individuals might also exceed their physical capabilities. The government is reportedly collaborating with regional authorities to enhance the safety of swimming areas.
