The FTSE 100 is anticipated to open slightly higher today, 21 August 2026, driven by an increase in consumer confidence. Fresh research indicates that the GfK consumer confidence index has reached its highest level in nearly two years.
The GfK index, which surveys households on their financial and economic outlook, jumped three points in August to minus 14. This figure marks the highest score recorded since August 2024.
In contrast, JD Sports shares experienced a fall of as much as 14 per cent on Thursday, after the company revised its profit guidance for the remainder of the year. This decline impacted London's blue-chip index, though it was supported elsewhere by mining and energy stocks. The FTSE 100 closed 4.8 points higher yesterday, while the FTSE 250 ended the session 134.9 points lower.
Internationally, attention remains on the US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's decision to double a buyback programme for longer-dated US bonds. Bessent announced plans on Wednesday to increase short-term borrowing to acquire $4bn worth of 30-year Treasuries, double the amount from the previous quarter. Gold prices have climbed to $4,543/oz, their highest since early June, amid concerns of further bond market intervention, while the dollar has fallen to its lowest against major currencies since April.
