A naturally occurring fungus has been identified as a potential new weapon against the African armyworm, a pest that devastates crops in east and southern Africa. South African scientist Letodi Luki Mathulwe discovered the fungus after observing dead caterpillars enveloped in a white substance in KwaZulu-Natal.
Mathulwe, an entomologist working for the agriculture department, gathered samples of the dead armyworms and the fungus for laboratory testing. Her team's peer-reviewed research indicates that the fungus could be used to fight the armyworms.
This discovery is considered a significant breakthrough, as existing chemical treatments are not effective against mature armyworm populations. The African armyworm not only consumes staple crops like maize and sorghum but also releases a chemical that can sicken cattle.
While further work and testing are needed to develop a product for farmers, Mathulwe believes it could offer hope and reduce the fear associated with armyworm outbreaks.
