The company, which has spent the last two years searching for a suitable location, ultimately chose the industrial site for its ambitious fusion energy project, dubbed Forge. The facility aims to achieve a significant milestone by creating its first plasma in 2029, marking a crucial step towards commercial fusion power.
Realta Fusion's decision to locate Forge at the old factory was driven by several strategic advantages. The site offers ample power infrastructure, essential for energy-intensive fusion research, and its proximity to Realta's existing headquarters in Madison provides operational benefits. However, a key factor in the company's choice was the robust bipartisan support from the Wisconsin state government, including the governor and legislature, who have actively sought to position the state as a leader in the nascent fusion industry.
Wisconsin's commitment to fusion is evident in the substantial incentives provided to Realta Fusion, totalling an estimated $55 million. This package includes a sales tax exemption for the fusion industry, signed into law in April, which alone is projected to save Realta approximately $37.5 million. Further support comes from $15 million in enterprise zone tax credits from the state and $2.8 million in tax increment financing from the city of Madison. This comprehensive backing underscores Wisconsin's strategic ambition to become a major hub for fusion energy development.
The timing of Wisconsin's embrace of fusion power appears opportune, coinciding with a global surge in investment and interest in the technology.
