The Galápagos Islands are bracing for an unprecedented environmental disaster as a devastating heatwave looms over the archipelago. The El Niño phenomenon, which is currently sweeping across the Pacific, threatens to upend the delicate balance of life in this unique ecosystem.
El Niño events are characterised by a warming of the eastern Pacific Ocean, driven by weakened trade winds that allow warm surface water to spread eastwards along the coast of South America. Scientists predict the current El Niño will continue to intensify throughout 2026 and into 2027, potentially contributing to record global temperatures.
Ordinarily, the waters surrounding the Galápagos support a diverse array of marine life, including penguins, fur seals, and coral reefs. However, during El Niño events, water temperatures soar from an average of 18°C to over 30°C, causing a catastrophic decline in fish populations as vital nutrients disappear.
Species on the Galápagos have adapted to these natural oscillations over time. Marine iguanas, for example, can temporarily shrink their body skeletons during severe El Niño events, enhancing their chances of survival when food is scarce. However, climate change is introducing a new and significant evolutionary challenge: El Niño events are becoming more frequent and more extreme.
According to Professor Emeritus of Ecology at Brown University, Jon Witman, the Galápagos' extreme temperature variability poses a major threat to its ecosystem. "Things are always going up and down with the El Niño-La Niña cycle," he warned. "But how much stress can an ecosystem take?" He highlighted the devastating impact of past El Niños, including the 1982-83 event that led to the extinction of several endemic species.
Witman and his team are now preparing for the potential impacts of the current 2026-27 El Niño, with concerns about climate shocks becoming so frequent that the ecosystem reaches a 'tipping point', transitioning into a new state characterised by lower productivity and biodiversity.
