Former England footballer Gary Lineker has contributed £10,000 to the England men’s amputee team, ensuring their participation in November’s World Cup in Mexico. This donation, along with support from private backers, has helped the team exceed their £50,000 fundraising goal.
The England amputee team, who were Nations League winners in 2023, has been reliant on fundraising to compete in major tournaments since the Football Association (FA) withdrew its financial backing in 2006. Despite the FA now supporting seven other para teams, the amputee side remains unfunded by the governing body.
Key figures at the charity are now preparing for meetings with other businesses to secure the team's long-term future. An FA spokesperson stated that the England Amputee team is currently independent from The FA, but they continue to work closely with the England Amputee Football Association to support their priorities and the development of amputee football.
