Great Britain's flag football team is on the hunt for new talent, inviting athletes from various sports to join their ranks with an eye on the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics. Flag football, a condensed and non-contact version of American football, is set to make its Olympic debut at LA28.
The GB team aims to qualify for the Games and is actively seeking male and female athletes who possess the potential to transition to the sport. British sprinter Amy Hunt, a 2024 medallist, highlighted the opportunity, stating that the LA28 Games are two years away, making this a crucial time for athletes to explore a new sport.
The GB women's team has a strong track record, having won the European Championships in 2023 and 2025. They narrowly missed out on an Olympic spot at this summer's World Championships, losing to Mexico in the bronze-medal game.
Chad Ehlertsen, chief executive of the British American Football Association (Bafa), noted that they are looking for elite athletes with qualities such as good hand-eye coordination, agility, speed, and decision-making under pressure. He added that coaches would help them learn the game.
Trials for the GB women's programme are scheduled for this Saturday and Sunday at Loughborough College. Approximately 70 individuals have already registered for these assessments.
