Hundreds of thousands of pupils across the country received their GCSE and Level 1 and 2 vocational and technical qualification results today, 20 August 2026. Overall GCSE outcomes for 16-year-olds improved by 0.2 percentage points at grade 4+.

Maths was a notable success, with over 6,000 more 16-year-olds achieving a grade 7 and above this year. This represents the largest ever increase in maths standards.

Technical qualifications also saw improvements, with 7,965 more Technical Award Level 2 passes achieved compared to last year. The North West and Yorkshire and Humber led in Technical Award take-up, with 55,230 and 52,480 certifications respectively.

Prime Minister Andy Burnham congratulated students, stating the government is ensuring more opportunities to choose a path to get on in life. Education Secretary Lucy Powell highlighted the climbing technical pass rates in every region and announced plans to introduce V Levels and expand T Levels and apprenticeships.

From next year, students will be able to study V Levels alongside expanded T Levels and fully-funded apprenticeships for under-25s. The government also plans to introduce new pathways for 14-year-olds to access technical skills and work experience the year after.

Why this matters: The increase in top maths grades and technical passes indicates a shift in educational outcomes, with the government aiming to put academic and technical routes on an equal footing.

What this means for you: If you are a student, new V Levels, expanded T Levels, and fully-funded apprenticeships for under-25s will be available from next year. If you are 14, new pathways for early access to technical skills will be available the year after.
