George Russell of Mercedes won the Azerbaijan Grand Prix, holding off a late challenge from Max Verstappen of Red Bull. Russell dominated the initial part of the race, while Verstappen advanced from eighth place on the grid.
Two safety car periods in quick succession positioned Verstappen on Russell's tail for the final 11 laps. Russell maintained his lead, winning by just under 0.2 seconds despite an issue with energy deployment on the final lap.
Russell's victory narrows his team-mate Kimi Antonelli's championship lead over him to 66 points. Russell stated, "It's amazing to be back on the top step of the podium. I do want to say a big thanks to my team because they've continued to believe in me through a tough moment, helped me come through it."
