A 16-year-old girl killed in a crash while walking to Highgate School in north London has been identified as Melissa Premaratne. The incident occurred on North Road, Highgate, at approximately 08:15 BST on Thursday.
The Metropolitan Police reported that officers were called to the scene following reports of a crash involving a pedestrian and a car. Melissa, a Year 12 pupil, was pronounced dead at the scene near the private school's main site.
The driver of the car, a 68-year-old man, remained at the scene and was arrested on suspicion of causing death by careless driving. Private hire group Addison Lee confirmed the vehicle involved belonged to their company, stating they are unable to comment further as facts are still being established.
Highgate School stated Melissa was on her way to school when the incident occurred. Her family described her as "a light in our lives and an amazing person."
