A couple from Glentham, Lincolnshire, are celebrating a significant lottery win after enduring a challenging period marked by serious health scares. Rebecca Andrews, 46, and her husband David Docherty, 70, were one of three ticket holders in the area to share a £1 million Postcode Lottery jackpot, securing £333,333 for themselves.
Their newfound fortune follows a harrowing few months where both faced life-threatening situations. Earlier this year, Mr Docherty spent weeks in intensive care recovering from emergency surgery. Just a few months later, Ms Andrews required urgent medical intervention from paramedics at her home after experiencing a severe allergic reaction to a hornet sting.
Reflecting on their dramatic turn of events, Mr Docherty expressed that the win has brought them renewed hope. Ms Andrews added that the year has been incredibly stressful, marked by a series of unfortunate events, including losing her job in the NHS in January, followed by their respective near-death experiences. The couple described the moment they received their winnings as 'unbelievable' and like a 'weird dream'.
Mr Docherty, a former ambulance worker, has a history of assisting others in critical situations, having previously supported British forces in Kosovo during the 1990s and aiding orphaned and injured children amidst the conflict. Now, the couple plans to use their winnings to support their loved ones and expand their animal family.
Their immediate plans include helping family members with upcoming weddings, such as Ms Andrews' nephew, who is getting married in December and needed assistance with a honeymoon, and Mr Docherty's niece. They also intend to add another kitten to their existing collection of animals, which currently includes horses, chickens, a cockerel named Elvis, a cat, and two cockatiels. Beyond their personal plans, four Lincolnshire-based charities – the Lincolnshire Trust for Cats, Lincolnshire Rural Support Network, Rock Foundation, and the Caistor Foodbank – have also collectively received £200,000 from the Postcode Lottery.
