The world's most innovative fashion designers are converging on global stages this summer as the R|Elan Circular Design Challenge (CDC) expands its reach with UK involvement. In a significant development, the eight-season-old platform has strengthened ties with international partners, forging a flagship partnership within the India–France Year of Innovation 2026.
Launched in India by Reliance Industries Limited’s R|Elan™, the United Nations in India, and Lakmé Fashion Week, the Challenge now boasts alliances with the Embassy of France in India and the Fédération de la Haute Couture et de la Mode (FHCM). These strategic partnerships will offer enhanced mentorship opportunities, improved market access, and facilitate creative exchanges across key fashion hubs including Paris, London, Hong Kong, and India.
Over 220 applications from around the world have been received for this year's edition, with 23 semi-finalists shortlisted to participate in a series of regional jury rounds. The European leg will kick off in Paris on 5 July, followed by a dedicated event in the UK on 9 July. Subsequent rounds are scheduled for the APAC region on 24 July and India on 28 July, highlighting the truly global nature of this year's competition.
Reliance Industries' Mr Hemant D. Sharma highlighted the Challenge's potential to empower aspiring designers with the necessary platform, mentorship, and access to material innovation, transforming their circular concepts into commercially viable solutions. The UN Resident Coordinator in India, Mr Stefan Priesner, underscored India's pivotal role in leading the global shift towards circular fashion practices, while representatives from the French Institute in India and FHCM stressed the importance of international collaboration in accelerating sustainable innovation and nurturing emerging talent.
Following regional assessments, successful finalists will embark on an intensive mentorship programme. The Challenge will culminate with a Grand Jury at the United Nations Headquarters in New Delhi, where winners will be announced at a high-profile showcase at the French Embassy during Lakmé Fashion Week x FDCI – an event expected to draw industry leaders, media, and sustainability advocates from across the globe.
