Dumbleton CC's batsmen lit the touchpaper of history as they scorched 417-2 against Hatherley and Reddings CC in a Premier One division Twenty20 fixture on Tuesday. The West of England league side will be hoping that their monumental total – just one run shy of the previous record held by Maavi in India back in 2017 – sets them up for a crack at the world record.
The fireworks began with Ewan Gegg, whose barnstorming innings of 206 not out from 55 deliveries left opponents and spectators alike gasping for air. Thirteen fours and 23 sixes sealed his status as one of T20 cricket's most destructive batsmen. Dan Holland added fuel to the fire, his 122 runs off just 37 balls ensuring that Dumbleton CC never looked back.
As Hatherley and Reddings CC stumbled to 229 all out, Harry Bloomfield gave them a glimmer of hope with an impressive 109 off 48 deliveries. However, it was a valiant effort in vain as the opposition's dominance proved too much to overcome – they fell short by a whopping 188 runs.
The question on everyone's lips is whether Dumbleton CC will be officially credited with the highest-ever total in T20 cricket. The precedent set by Maavi in 2017 could pave the way for this record-breaking tally, one that eclipses England's national team's previous best of 304-2 against South Africa last September.
Gegg, aged just 23, reflected on their extraordinary scoring, pointing to the team's desire to secure a home quarter-final as motivation. He also revealed that their home ground has a reputation for being a good wicket – albeit slightly restrictive on one side – while the pink ball used in the match may have contributed to the batters' ability to maintain their aggressive approach.
