Google is facing a legal challenge from an AI engineer who claims he was unfairly dismissed after he protested against its work for the Israeli government.
The engineer, who has not been named, distributed flyers around Google DeepMind's London offices, which read 'Google provides military AI to Israel'.
The move is the latest sign of growing concern about the social and ethical impacts of AI, with many experts calling for greater transparency and accountability in the development and deployment of AI systems.
According to the employment tribunal claim, the engineer was sacked in August 2022, following a meeting with his manager, who reportedly told him that his actions were 'unacceptable'.
The claimant is seeking compensation for unfair dismissal and is also asking for a declaration that Google's actions were discriminatory and breached the Equality Act 2010.
Google has not commented on the case, but the company has previously stated that it does not comment on individual employment cases.
