Google has announced it is bringing its Gemini AI into the agentic age with the launch of a unified agent that can answer questions and carry out tasks on the user's behalf from a single interface. The company made the announcement at a Google Cloud event on Thursday.
Google CEO Sundar Pichai said at the event that Gemini has over 1 billion monthly active users, and that nearly 90% of Fortune 100 businesses now use Gemini Enterprise at work. Given that corporate adoption, Google will initially focus on bringing the agent to businesses before later rolling it out to consumers.
Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, said the new agent can be given "objectives, not just instructions," allowing it to plan work, use custom skills and tools, and connect to businesses' internal systems. By default the AI picks the best model for a task, but users can choose a model themselves, including third-party options starting with Anthropic's Claude models. Google said it will expand the model picker to include open source and other private models in the future.
The agent can connect to systems including Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, Slack, Jira, Confluence, Git, BigQuery, Databricks, Postgres and Snowflake, and can work with any Model Context Protocol server inside or outside a company's network. Users can follow its activity through a "tasks inbox" interface showing its thinking process, delegation to subagents, skills, code and progress.
The AI will have its own Workspace account, with its own email address and context, and writes an audit trail attributed to the agent rather than a person. It will be accessible from iOS and Android mobile devices, Windows and Mac desktops, the command line interface, Google Workspace, Microsoft 365, ServiceNow and Slack. Early testers included On, Shopify and PayPal, Google said.
