The Google Fitbit Air, a new screenless fitness tracker, is available for £85. This device aims to reduce digital distractions by removing a display, buttons, and menus, instead sending health data to a smartphone via Bluetooth.
Independent lab tests have shown the Fitbit Air's sensors to be highly accurate. It recorded a heart rate error rate of 0.83% and a 2.35% error rate for running tests, outperforming average smartwatches and fitness trackers in these areas. However, without built-in GPS, its overall daily distance tracking has a 10.80% error rate, which is comparable to the average for fitness trackers.
The absence of a power-hungry display contributes to an impressive battery life, with lab tests indicating it can last up to 199 hours, or more than eight days, on a single charge. Recharging takes just over an hour for a full battery.
While the Fitbit Air excels in sensor accuracy and battery life, its reliance on automatic exercise detection means it may not log shorter activities. Users also need to access their smartphone for basic health checks, which could increase phone reliance for some.
