Google introduces new 'Preferred Sources' button for publishers

Google has launched a new 'Preferred Sources' button for publishers, allowing readers to designate websites as favourite sources across Google Search, Discover, and Google News.

  • The new 'Preferred Sources' button can be embedded on publishers' websites.
  • Readers can select a preferred source to see it highlighted more often in Google services.
  • Google states that people are twice as likely to click through to a preferred source.

Google has introduced a new 'Preferred Sources' button for online publishers, available from Thursday, 20 August 2026. This feature allows readers to mark a publisher's website as a "favorite source" to be highlighted across Google Search, Discover, and Google News.

The tech giant stated that the new interactive button is intended for publishers to embed on their own websites. This initiative follows Google's earlier rollout of Preferred Sources in May for its AI experiences, including AI Mode and AI Overviews, and its prior availability in Top Stories.

Google indicated that becoming a preferred source can increase traffic to publishers' websites. The company's studies found that users are twice as likely to click on a preferred source when available. Additionally, Google announced that readers will soon be able to customise their Discover feed in the Google app using natural language commands, and Android users will be able to customise audio daily briefings in the Google News app.

What this means for you: You can now designate your favourite websites as preferred sources on Google Search, Discover, and Google News, potentially seeing more content from them. You can also visit Google’s source preferences page to add a site as a favourite publisher.
