Google, Nvidia, and Anthropic Join Coalition to Add 100 GW Data Centre Capacity

A new coalition, including Google, Nvidia, and Anthropic, aims to integrate demand response into data centre development to free up 100 gigawatts of grid capacity.

A new coalition, the AI Energy Management Alliance (AEMA), has been formed by grid software company Emerald AI, alongside Google and Nvidia, with Anthropic also joining. The alliance aims to use Emerald AI's technology to secure grid space for more data centres.

AEMA intends to make demand response a core part of data centre development. This approach involves data centres temporarily reducing their electricity use, such as by pausing noncritical tasks or shifting compute loads. The coalition states this could allow an additional 100 gigawatts of data centres to connect to the grid.

Utilities including AES, Constellation, National Grid, and NRG Energy are also part of the alliance. Emerald AI's software is designed to connect utilities directly with data centres, enabling quick responses to requests by pausing tasks or shifting loads to other data centres with available grid capacity.

Why this matters: This initiative could help address the increasing demand for grid capacity from data centres, particularly those supporting AI compute loads, by optimising existing infrastructure rather than solely relying on new generating sources.
