Google has introduced a new system on Android designed to simplify the process of switching between password manager applications. This update, announced on Thursday, allows users to move all their passwords and passkeys directly between apps without the need for CSV file downloads.
To utilise the new feature, users initiate the transfer from their new password manager app, choosing to import or copy data. Android will then detect existing manager apps on the device and facilitate the transfer, allowing users to review and approve the information being moved.
This method also supports the transfer of passkeys, meaning users will not need to re-establish them in a new app. Google stated that this approach also helps to prevent the risk of data exposure often associated with CSV files. The new experience is currently available with select partners, including 1Password, Bitwarden, and Dashlane, and is compatible with all devices running Android 8 or higher.
