Google has unveiled the Pixel Watch 5 at its Made by Google event, featuring a smarter Gemini experience and advanced health monitoring. The smartwatch starts at $399 and can track blood pressure patterns and insulin resistance, as well as provide personalized help and improved sleep tracking.
Google says the watch will proactively suggest actions based on context, such as pulling up a smoothie place mentioned in a text message. Users can raise their wrist to ask Gemini questions, find nearby lunch spots with navigation, or use Gemini offline to manage timers, alarms, and workouts by voice.
The health features use sensors and machine learning to track blood pressure patterns before they strain the heart. Google says the feature was tested against 24-hour blood pressure monitors and uses a model trained on more than 1 billion minutes of data from over 500,000 people. The insulin resistance feature combines signals from sleep, heart rate, physical activity, and other data to identify long-term changes that may be associated with increased risk of prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.
There is also a new feature that can detect a persistent drop in oxygen saturation and contact emergency services if a breathing emergency may be occurring, launching in select European countries first. Sleep-stage tracking is said to be 15% more accurate, and a new Smart Wake feature wakes users at an optimal point in their sleep cycle.
The Pixel Watch 5 features the Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 platform, with 12% more CPU performance and 50% more RAM than the previous platform. Google says the watch is 20% faster overall and offers up to 40 hours of battery life. It is available in new colors including Canyon Fog and Olive, with pre-orders starting Wednesday and availability on August 20.
