Trainer Danny Shum is looking to reignite his pursuit of the trainers' championship, turning to champion jockey Zac Purton to guide his horses to victory at Sha Tin. Shum, who recently saw a strong run of form stall, is now five wins adrift of current leader Caspar Fownes with just nine race meetings remaining in the season.
Shum's stables had been enjoying considerable success, including Romantic Warrior's Triple Crown win, which had put him in a commanding position in the trainers' title race. However, a recent dip in form, yielding only one win from the last four race-meetings, has created a significant gap to the top.
A key focus for Shum's comeback attempt is Gorgeous Victory, who will compete in division two of the seven-furlong Swan Handicap (11:30 GMT). Ridden by Purton, the lightly raced son of Lucky Vega has shown progressive form, with his best performance to date coming last month when he finished strongly over seven furlongs. With Purton riding at his minimum weight, expectations for this partnership are high.
The duo will also team up with Blazing Wind in the competitive six-furlong Snipe Handicap (13:05 GMT) on the all-weather track. While Blazing Wind secured a convincing victory over the course and distance last month, that success has resulted in a substantial 11-pound penalty. Combined with an unfavourable wide draw in stall 10, the horse will need an exceptional performance to contend for victory.
Purton, known for his consistent success, has several other promising rides on the card. He is particularly fancied to deliver a strong showing with Aerovolanic in the seven-furlong Owl Handicap (14:15 GMT). The four-year-old previously placed third from an outside draw and now benefits from a favourable gate in two, alongside a recent impressive trial performance, suggesting it is in prime condition to challenge.
The upcoming races are crucial for Shum's championship aspirations, and the spotlight will be firmly on his partnership with Purton to close the gap on Fownes in the final stages of the season.
