The Government has pledged £3 million in new funding for the British Fashion Council's (BFC) NEWGEN scheme, with £1 million allocated annually for the next three years. This commitment extends government support for the initiative until 2029.
BFC NEWGEN, which has been run by the British Fashion Council since 1993, identifies and nurtures promising UK fashion designers. The scheme provides financial assistance, mentoring, and opportunities for designers to showcase their collections at London Fashion Week.
Culture Secretary Lisa Nandy stated that fashion is central to the UK's economy and cultural identity, expressing a desire to cultivate the next generation of home-grown talent. Creative Industries Minister Ian Murray marked the announcement by attending a showcase by Francesca Lake, a 2026/27 funding recipient.
Laura Weir, CEO of the British Fashion Council, expressed gratitude for the multi-year investment, highlighting its proven impact on commercial growth, international visibility, and the long-term sustainability of designer businesses.
