The government has initiated a consultation regarding potential changes to the electric vehicle (EV) sales targets for 2030. The current rules mandate that 80% of all new cars sold in 2030 must be electric vehicles.
Launched on Friday, 14 August 2026, the consultation includes several options. These range from maintaining the existing 80% target to reducing it to 70%, 60%, or as low as 50% of all new cars.
The automotive industry has expressed concerns that the current targets, known as the zero emission vehicle (ZEV) mandate, are placing significant pressure on manufacturers. They have indicated that the mandate forces them to sell electric cars at discounts.
Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander stated that it is important to keep targets under review to ensure they are practical and support British industry. She added that the end goal has not changed, but businesses need to be included in the transition.
