Government launches 'Respond' campaign to support abuse victims

The government has launched a new campaign, 'Respond', urging the public to 'Listen, Believe, Support' when someone discloses abuse. This initiative is part of the wider ENOUGH campaign.

  • The 'Respond' campaign aims to help the public know how to react to disclosures of abuse.
  • It encourages people to 'Listen, Believe, Support' victims who confide in them.
  • The campaign is a component of the government's broader ENOUGH campaign, which targets violence against women and girls.

The government has launched a new campaign called 'Respond', designed to help the public better support victims of abuse. The campaign encourages individuals to "Listen, Believe and Support" when someone confides in them about abuse, recognising that the initial response can be crucial for victims seeking further help.

Minister for Victims, Tackling Violence Against Women and Girls and International Justice, Alex Davies-Jones, stated that 'Respond' aims to give friends and families the confidence to know how to respond. The campaign provides tips, examples of supportive language, and signs to identify someone at risk.

'Respond' is part of the cross-Government ENOUGH campaign, which seeks to challenge perpetrators of violence against women and girls (VAWG), support victims, and educate young people. The ENOUGH campaign also includes a 'Challenge' strand, launched in December 2025, to raise awareness of abusive behaviours.

A new Support Space has been created on the ENOUGH campaign website, offering guidance, information, and access to specialist support for victims, survivors, and those assisting them. The government is also investing £550 million over the next three years into specialist support services for victims and witnesses.

Why this matters: The campaign aims to improve community support for abuse victims, potentially influencing whether they seek further help or report their experiences.

What this means for you: You can access tips, information, and advice from the campaign on how to respond to disclosures of abuse, and find guidance on the ENOUGH campaign website if you are a victim, survivor, or supporting someone who is.
