The government has formally requested that the Electoral Commission undertake an independent assessment of political party spending limits. This request was made via correspondence from the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government and the First Secretary of State.
The commission has been asked to review the spending limits applicable to registered political parties, third-party campaigners, and candidates in reserved elections. The purpose is to advise on whether these limits remain appropriate.
The Electoral Commission is expected to provide its advice by July 2027. Under the Political Parties, Elections and Referendums Act 2000, the government holds the power to amend spending limits through secondary legislation, following recommendations from the commission.
