Rockstar Games has confirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will not include microtransactions or generative AI assets at its launch. This information follows an extended gameplay reveal on Friday evening, August 28, which showcased footage captured on a PlayStation 5.
Speaking to Dazed, Rob Nelson, co-studio head of Rockstar North, indicated that the game aims to be more grounded and realistic compared to previous titles in the series. Kinda Funny Games reported that Rockstar denied the inclusion of these two aspects, stating there would be “no monetisations in this game” and “no AI.”
Strauss Zelnick, boss of Take-Two Interactive, the publisher of GTA 6, previously stated earlier this year that “generative AI has zero part in what Rockstar Games is building,” emphasising the handcrafted nature of their game worlds. However, Zelnick also confirmed that Take-Two is exploring generative AI for internal efficiencies and cost reduction.
Despite the absence of microtransactions at launch, an 'Ultimate' edition of Grand Theft Auto 6, priced £20 more than the standard version, was available for pre-order earlier this year. This edition includes an exclusive collection of premium vehicles, weapons, and apparel, and was reportedly chosen by a majority of fans despite some backlash.
