The site for Great British Railways' (GBR) headquarters has been unveiled today, 15 October 2026, in Derby. This decision is a step towards establishing a publicly owned railway.
The new development at Becketwell, a brownfield site in Derby city centre, is expected to begin construction in early 2027 and be completed by spring 2029. It is anticipated to bring hundreds of rail jobs to the city and an estimated £151 million boost to the region's economy.
Additionally, up to 600 GBR apprenticeship places will be opened over the next four years for young people aged 16 to 21. The first apprentices will be based in Derby, participating in the rail foundation apprenticeship programme.
The new headquarters will accommodate up to 450 GBR staff and will be supported by improved public transport links and walking routes.
