Great British Summer Savings: VAT Cut Offers Family Deals on Days Out & Meals

Families across the UK can enjoy discounted days out and meals this summer thanks to a temporary VAT cut. The government scheme aims to ease cost of living pressures during the school holidays.

  • VAT reduced from 20% to 5% on various family activities and children's meals.
  • Scheme runs from 25th June until 1st September, covering school holiday periods.
  • Savings include up to £20 on theme park tickets and £1.50 on children's cinema tickets.
  • Major attractions and restaurant chains are participating, but businesses can choose whether to pass on savings.
  • Discounts apply to in-restaurant children's meals, not standard takeaways or season passes.

The UK government has launched 'Great British Summer Savings', a VAT cut scheme aimed at easing financial burdens during the school holidays. From June 25th until September 1st, families can enjoy reduced prices on family-friendly activities and children's meals due to the temporary reduction in Value Added Tax (VAT) from 20% to 5%. The initiative seeks to provide some relief for households struggling with cost of living concerns.

The participating attractions and businesses include Alton Towers, Legoland, Peppa Pig World, and Merlin Entertainments' over 20 venues. Advance tickets for these sites now start at £29.75, a reduction from £34. Longleat Safari Park is offering discounts on family tickets, bringing the cost down to £122.30 (saving £17.50). Major cinema chains like Odeon, Vue, and Cineworld are also involved, with potential savings of up to £4 on a family ticket.

For dining out, prominent names such as Greene King, McDonald's, Wetherspoons, and Nando's have committed to passing on the VAT saving on children's meals. For instance, Nando's 'Nandino' meals will see a price reduction from £6.95 to £6.08, while a typical Wetherspoons children's meal will decrease from £5.75 to £5.03. McDonald's is offering a 27% reduction on a typical Happy Meal, bringing the price down to £2.99.

It's essential for consumers to note that while many businesses are participating in the scheme, there is no legal obligation for them to pass on the full VAT reduction. Some may choose not to or only pass on part of it. Additionally, specific conditions apply, such as the reduced VAT rate on children's meals only applying when eaten in a restaurant or cafe and not typically extending to standard takeaways.
