Greater Manchester residents are bracing themselves for another sweltering spell, with forecasters predicting temperatures could hit 30°C by the end of the week. A high-pressure system is firmly in place over the UK, drawing in warmer air from mainland Europe and triggering a return to heatwave conditions.
The Met Office warns that urban areas like Manchester will bear the brunt of the heat, with temperatures amplified by the 'urban heat island' effect. Wind speeds are expected to remain light, offering little respite from the sweltering conditions.
Across England, particularly in the south and central regions, temperatures are likely to soar above 28°C, while Scotland and Northern Ireland will enjoy pleasant warmth with highs in the low to mid-20s Celsius. Wales, meanwhile, can expect temperatures similar to those in central England, though some areas may experience variations.
With heatwaves becoming increasingly frequent, public health authorities are reiterating advice on how to stay safe. This includes staying hydrated by drinking plenty of water, seeking shade during the hottest periods (typically between 11 am and 3 pm), wearing light-coloured, loose-fitting clothing, and checking on vulnerable friends, family, and neighbours.
Pet owners are also being urged to ensure animals have access to shade and fresh water. While no specific Met Office heat health warning has been issued, the expected temperatures are significant enough to warrant caution. Previous heatwaves have led to increased demand on healthcare services, and this upcoming period of hot weather could pose similar challenges if precautions are not taken.
