Polls have opened for the Greater Manchester mayoral by-election, where more than 2 million people are eligible to elect Andy Burnham's successor. This contest follows Burnham's ascent to Prime Minister after winning the Makerfield by-election on 18 June.
Labour's Bev Craig, currently the leader of Manchester city council, is expected to win comfortably. A More in Common poll conducted this week, mostly before Burnham became Prime Minister, gave Craig a 20 percentage point lead over Reform UK's Sian Astley. The Greens were in third place with 14 points, ahead of the Conservatives.
The by-election is being held under the supplementary voting system. The result is anticipated on Friday afternoon.
