Green Party peer Jenny Jones has announced her refusal to pay the sewage element of her Thames Water bill. She stated her decision was influenced by a July 2025 Guardian report indicating a 60% rise in serious pollution incidents by English water companies in the previous year, with Thames Water identified as the worst offender among 75 serious incidents out of a total of 2,800.
Jones, a Thames Water customer in London, explained that she wrote to the company offering to pay for water supply but not for sewage. Thames Water reportedly responded that they do not separate these proportions and subsequently sent a threatening letter along with an increased bill including penalty charges.
Jones stated she will continue her protest and is awaiting a court case. She also mentioned that she was previously taken to court over non-payment of the poll tax.
