Greenland has urged cruise ship companies to limit their sailings through its fjords, citing concerns over excessive noise and the impact on wildlife. The Greenland government, Naalakkersuisut, stated earlier this month that these vessels are burdening the local population and affecting natural areas.
The government has asked cruises to "avoid or limit" sailings within fjord areas as much as possible to reduce pressure. Alongside this plea, Greenland is developing zoning restrictions under its Tourism Act, which will define areas open to cruise ships and those with limitations.
Greenland's tourism sector is expanding, with almost 180,000 tourists visiting in 2025, an eight per cent increase from 2024. While the government views this growing interest as "positive" and acknowledges cruise tourism's contribution to local communities, it plans to limit cruises in fjord areas to ensure "tourism development takes place on a sustainable basis and with respect for the local population, nature and wildlife."
The planned cruise restriction zones are being developed in collaboration with local communities, businesses, and other stakeholders. They are expected to come into force following a consultation period.
