Edinburgh's Grid Iron company is currently presenting an adaptation of Andrew O’Hagan’s novel, 'Mayflies', at Rear Warehouse, Brown’s of Leith. The production runs until 30 August.
The play, adapted and directed by Ben Harrison, focuses on a teenage trip to Manchester in 1986, including a visit to the Haçienda. The narrative also explores the adult lives of the characters, including Tully Dawson's journey after a terminal cancer diagnosis, leading to his choice to end his life at Dignitas.
The staging in a Leith warehouse aims to evoke the atmosphere of the Thatcher-era transition from heavy industry to the leisure economy. The production features projections by Lewis den Hertog and a soundtrack by David Paul Jones, incorporating music from bands such as Joy Division and The Smiths.
