Grok chatbot glitch sends gibberish responses to some users

xAI's Grok chatbot has been sending gibberish responses to some users, reportedly affecting those using Grok Lite. The company acknowledged the issue on X, calling it a rare temporary generation glitch.

  • Affected users told TechCrunch they were using Grok Lite and noticed issues as early as Wednesday morning.
  • The Grok account on X confirmed the issue, describing it as a rare temporary generation glitch.
  • The bug appears limited to direct queries on Grok.com; the Grok account on X.com was unaffected.

xAI's Grok chatbot has been sending gibberish responses to some users, with one user receiving the reply: “match it without and your they and two for planets can practical and often cheese…” after asking the model to generate a PDF.

Affected users who spoke to TechCrunch said they were using Grok Lite and noticed the issues as early as Wednesday morning. TechCrunch was unable to reproduce the issue in its own testing, and it is likely affecting only a small subset of users.

The bug appears to be limited to direct queries on Grok.com, and the Grok account on X.com has been unaffected. Refreshing the session often restores normal function, but some users reported the gibberish continued even after multiple refreshes.

Responding to unhappy users, the Grok account confirmed the issues on X, writing: “That pure word salad is a rare temporary generation glitch. Official status at https://status.x.ai shows all Grok services fully operational with no incidents. Start a fresh chat or regenerate—it usually clears right away. Sorry about the gibberish.”

Why this matters: The glitch highlights potential reliability issues in widely used AI chatbots, even as xAI continues to develop and release advanced models.

What this means for you: If you use Grok Lite and encounter gibberish responses, starting a fresh chat or regenerating may resolve the issue.
