A phenomenon known as "caregiver creep" is gaining recognition among healthcare providers and experts. This term describes how initial, light tasks to help an ageing parent or loved one, such as picking up prescriptions or driving to appointments, can gradually expand into extensive, full-time caregiving responsibilities.
Unlike a sudden requirement for care following an unexpected health event, caregiver creep is characterised by a slow build-up of tasks and increased responsibilities that may not be immediately apparent. While not a formal term, awareness of this gradual shift is growing.
Recognising when caregiving responsibilities are increasing, understanding when more support is needed, and knowing where to access resources for both the person receiving care and the caregiver are considered important steps in managing caregiver creep.
