The Guardian has announced the winner of its Invertebrate of the Year 2026. This year's competition was reportedly a much closer contest compared to previous years, which saw the tardigrade and common earthworm win by large margins.

The annual competition was launched three years ago to highlight invertebrates, which account for at least 1.7 million species and approximately 97% of all animals.
