The previously un-named grave of Second Lieutenant (2nd Lt) Frank Fleming, an officer from Guildford, Surrey, has been identified and rededicated in his name. He served with the Seaforth Highlanders and died on 22 September 1918, 108 years ago.
A rededication service for 2nd Lt Frank Fleming was organised by the UK MOD’s ‘War Detectives’ at CWGC Voormezeele Enclosure No. 3, Belgium. Soldiers from 4th Battalion The Royal Regiment of Scotland supported the service.
Frank Fleming was born in Guildford on 15 October 1894. He was one of three sons of Alexander and Mary Fleming, all of whom lost their lives during World War 1. He was commissioned into the Seaforth Highlanders after joining the Army.
During the German Spring Offensive in April 1918, 2nd Lt Fleming was seriously wounded while leading his men in an attack near Hollebeke, Belgium. He ordered his men to withdraw to safety and refused rescue, later being listed as missing. Research submitted by a member of the public showed he was buried in the Hollebeke area and later moved to Voormezeele Enclosure No. 3.
